Movie Show Prudes: First, leave the lights on

You will begin to notice that many stories like this conclude, "A good time was had by all"...

Of course these censors were not really prudes. As you read the article you understand they are not only well-meaning but also realistic. There are moderating voices, to keep the 'clergy' to one side and permit genuine entertainment. According to this 1909 article, at least 300,000 people attended the movie theater every day. Reasonable people understood and sympathized with hard working people who had already come to rely on this wonderful diversion.

Frank Norris' novel "McTeague" has a wonderful scene describing a family attending the movies.
